Judge Suzanne Rice tells 28-year-old with 37 previous drug convictions that the court must bring his habit to an end.

A man with 37 previous convictions for drugs has been jailed at Derry Magistrate's Court for possessing class A and B drugs.

Sean Connell (28) of no fixed abode admitted the offences that occurred on June 15.

The court was told that police were called to the Simon Community who were requesting assistance in regards to Connell.

They spoke to staff who told them of their concerns and then Connell appeared in a communal area.

A subsequent search uncovered class A and B drugs and Connell said he had picked some of them up in the street.

Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott accepted his client had 'an appalling record' but these charges were for simple possession.

He said that the drugs were 'very small amounts' and said he would have been given police bail except he had no address.

District Judge Suzanne Rice said Connell had 'sentence after sentence' for class B and C drugs and had now 'graduated' to class A.

She said that the court had to bring to an end 'this habit' and added that immediate custody was inevitable.

Connell was jailed for two months.
