35-year-old handed a immediate custodial sentence at Derry Magistrate's Court for a series of drug offences and assault on police.

A man has been jailed at Derry Magistrate's Court today for drug offences and assaults on police.

Harry Boyle (35) of Carnhill in Derry admitted drug offences that occurred on August 29 this year.

The court heard that police stopped Boyle in Foyle Street and searched him.

They found two strips odd class C tablets.

Then on August 31 police found a quantity of class B and C drugs on Boyle.

Following this he became aggressive and made what a prosecutor said were 'unsavoury comments' including threatening to pour hot tar on police.

His behaviour then 'escalated' and he spat in a police officer's face.

Defence counsel Sean Doherty said Boyle had no memory of some of the offences.

He said he regretted his remarks and it was a 'despicable' way to behave.

The barrister said that a custodial sentence was inevitable.

Deputy District Judge Sean O'Hare said that this behaviour was 'utterly despicable and indefensible.'

He sentenced Boyle to 6 months in prison.
