39-year-old faces multiple charges including assault occasioning ABH, attacking a police officer, and drug possession

A man who was denying assaulting a female told police he was dressed up and had shouted 'up the INLA' but debunked everything else.

Adam Toner (39) with an address in Great James Street in Derry was charged assaulting a female occasioning her actual bodily harm, disorderly behaviour in Great James Street, assaulting a police officer, criminal damage to a police vehicle and possessing class C drugs on October 31.

A police officer connected the accused to the charges.

The court heard that at 10.35pm on October 31 police were called to a report of an assault in Great James Street and found a female with bruising to her face and blood on her.

She told police Toner had assaulted her 'out of the blue'.

Police searched the defendant's address and allegedly found drugs there.

The defendant was said to have been 'shouting and swearing' and when arrested was said to have spat in a police vehicle and assaulted an officer.

During interview Toner said he was in 'an on/off relationship' with the alleged injured party in the case a claim she denied.

He denied assaulting the woman and having the drugs.

Bail was opposed as police believed Toner could not be managed by conditions.

Defence solicitor Chris Logue said Toner denied having the drugs.

As regards the assault the solicitor said his client would claim he was assaulted.

District Judge Suzanne Rice said that the defendant had 'a significant record' and in this case was charged with assaulting 'a vulnerable injured party'.

Bail was refused and Toner was remanded in custody to appear again on November 19.
