Judge rules intoxication is 'no excuse' as 28-year-old sentenced

A man has been jailed at Derry Magistrate's Court today for assaulting two police officers.

Eoin Collins (28) of Malin Gardens in Derry admitted assaulting two police officers on November 19 last year.

Collins also admitted a charge of resisting police on the same date.

The court heard that during an interaction with police Collins punched one officer in the face and kicked another one.

Defence counsel Stephen Chapman said that the report in the case did not 'make for good reading'.

District Judge Ted Magill said that Collins had 45 previous convictions.

He said the fact that the defendant had very little recollection of events due to his intoxication was 'no excuse'.

The judge added that a prison sentence in this case was appropriate and jailed Collins for three months.
