A man who threatened to assault a Palestinian man claiming it was in 'retaliation' for a assault on him by another Palestinian has appeared at Derry Magistrates' Court today.
Shane Doherty (28) of Tamlough Park in Ballykelly appeared charged with several offences that were said to have occurred on March 21.
A police officer connected the accused to the charges.
The court was told that around 1pm on March 21 Doherty entered a fast food outlet in Derry city centre.
He was causing a disturbance and shouting racial slurs.
As he was leaving he spat blood on the glass door.
Doherty was then said to have gone to an apartment in Shipquay Street where a Palestinian family resided.
He banged on the door and demanded entry but they closed the door on him.
A short time later one of the family left the apartment and Doherty was waiting and chased him.
Several witnesses reported seeing him chasing the man and he was said to have continued shouting abuse.
When interviewed Doherty said he made full admissions and accepted that if people said he had done what they claimed he must have done that.
Doherty denied any racial motivation and the court heard he had lost his job due to his alcohol issues. Defence counsel Stephen McNicholl said his client had alcohol issues but had the opportunity to secure another job.
He was granted bail on condition he has no contact with the alleged injured parties and doesn't enter the city side of Derry.
Doherty will appear again on April 20.
