The Coleraine and Limavady Neighbourhood Renewal Partnerships, alongside over 20 dedicated community and voluntary sector organisations, have reaffirmed their commitment to improving educational achievement and attainment across their communities – a key priority highlighted in both local Action Plans.

One strategic action being taken this summer is a collaborative initiative with Libraries NI to actively promote and support the Big Summer Read. This region-wide literacy programme aims to maintain and boost children’s reading levels throughout the summer holidays – a period when reading ability is known to decline, particularly for those already facing barriers to educational success.

“Reading over the summer helps children build confidence, maintain their reading age, and develop a lifelong love of books. It supports learning in a fun and accessible way while reducing the attainment gap, we so often see in our communities,” said Elaine Donnelly, Chair of the Coleraine Neighbourhood Renewal Partnership Board and Programme Manager Coleraine SureStart Partnership.

Libraries across Causeway Coast and Glens are gearing up for a vibrant season of activities. In addition to book borrowing, the libraries offer free computer and internet access, eBooks and eMagazines, welcoming space for families and individuals alike. A full programme of free events will run throughout July and August to support the Big Summer Read, offering interactive storytelling, crafts, and family-friendly literacy activities.

“This is more than just a reading challenge – it’s about ensuring our children and young people have the opportunity to thrive, feel included, and use the services that exist to support their development,” said Karen Campbell, Chair of the Limavady Neighbourhood Renewal Partnership Board and Manager of Roe Valley Residents Association.

Linzie King, Libraries NI District Manager for Causeway Coast and Glens and Board member for both Coleraine and Limavady Neighbourhood Renewal Partnerships added: “Libraries have always been a hub for learning, creativity and connection. We're delighted to work with the Coleraine and Limavady NR Partnerships and their community partners to encourage as many children as possible to take part in this year’s Big Summer Read. With so many free services and events available, there’s something here for every family and we look forward to welcoming them into our libraries over the summer months.”

This cross-sector initiative not only reinforces the importance of early and sustained engagement with education but also highlights the power of local collaboration in creating positive, long-term change.
