Friels Bar & Restaurant invites the community to step into a living story of resilience and tradition at a special event, “Nettles, Nourishment & Survival,” on Thursday 5th June. The evening will feature acclaimed local author Marian Conway, whose book The Mettle of Nettles explores the restorative and strengthening power of the humble stinging nettle.

From 7.30pm, guests will hear Marian Conway share tales of hardship, hope, and the vitalrole of nettles in Irish survival through the ages. Attendees will also enjoy a complimentary sample of Friels’ chef’s signature nettle soup, highlighting the plant’s nourishing legacy.

Nettles are far more than a symbol of resilience. They are a true superfood, packed with vitamins A, C, and K, as well as calcium, iron, magnesium, and powerful antioxidants that support immune function, bone health, and overall vitality. Long valued in Irish tradition for their ability to relieve joint pain, purify the blood, and boost well-being, nettles also contain anti-inflammatory and antihistamine properties that can help with allergies and arthritis. By featuring nourishing nettle soup at this event, Friels Bar & Restaurant not only honours local heritage but also offers guests a taste of the remarkable nutritional and health benefits that have sustained Irish communities for generations.

Earlier in the day, the Gorta Swatragh visitor centre will open its doors from 3pm to 7pm, offering free entry to its Famine Story exhibition. Visitors can explore famine-era artefacts and learn about Dr. Mooney’s historic soup kitchen, located on the very site where these stories unfolded.

The evening will conclude with live traditional Irish music from 9pm to 11pm, creating a spirited atmosphere to celebrate the enduring strength of the local community.

This event is free to attend, but booking is essential. Reserve your place via Eventbrite.
