Ballinascreen Historical Society’s recently launched book listing the old registers from St Columba’s and St Anne’s churches is of so much more than a limited denominational interest. For example, baptisms appear from 1808 and, in many entries the occupation of the father is also recorded – slaters, weavers, shoemakers, revenue police, flax dressers, smiths, carpenters, bakers, tailors, gate keepers, rope makers, pedlars, butlers, road surveyors, seamstresses, coachmen, railway guards, in addition to hundreds of farmers and labourers.

The book has 173 pages containing 1585 transcribed entries. There are 177 footnotes, 37 illustrations, 10 appendices and an index of 397 surnames. This superb parish archive is currently available from the society’s comprehensive online bookstore or, for a limited period, from Sheehy’s, Cookstown; Spar, Tobermore and several regular outlets in Draperstown. It would be a unique Christmas gift to browse through during the holiday season.
