Regular AWARE NI supporter, Veronica Armstrong and family present charity with cheque following annual Leo Armstrong Charity Golf Event.
As World Mental Health Day on October 10 approaches, AWARE NI, Northern Ireland’s leading charity supporting individuals with depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder, is calling on the people and businesses of Derry to join their ‘By Your Side’ campaign.
This initiative aims to ensure AWARE NI can continue to stand by those needing mental health support across the region and beyond.
“One in five adults in Northern Ireland faces mental health challenges, underscoring the critical need for accessible support services,” says Margaret McCrossan, Community and Events Fundraising Officer at AWARE NI.
“Our ‘By Your Side’ campaign not only aims to raise vital funds but also reinforces our commitment to supporting individuals through their mental health journeys.”
AWARE NI operates a network of 23 peer-led mental health support groups, including the Derry Support Group, where participants affected by mental health challenges find a safe space to share experiences and build resilience. These groups are essential for providing support and fostering a sense of community among individuals facing similar challenges.
“We encourage the Derry community to join us in our fundraising efforts,” continues Margaret.
“By standing ‘By Your Side’ during this campaign, we can work together to ensure AWARE NI continues providing essential services to those who depend on us. Fundraising for AWARE NI is a powerful way to make a difference, and we will be ‘By Your Side’ with whatever you need.”
In the lead-up to World Mental Health Day, AWARE NI calls on individuals, schools, community groups, and businesses to get involved in various fundraising activities. From sponsored events to community initiatives like ‘You, Me, and a Cup of Tea,’ an AWARE NI-branded coffee morning bringing people together for conversations over a cuppa, every contribution, large or small, makes a meaningful impact.
Claudy woman, Veronica Armstrong, who has supported AWARE NI through the Leo Armstrong Charity Golf Tournament, shares her motivation.
“In 2018, my two sons and I held the first Golf Tournament in memory of my husband, their dad. This is now the seventh year. When we were deciding on our charities, we knew we wanted to support local organisations providing mental health programmes within our area, as our local community has sadly been affected by the loss of young lives. Mental health matters, and we are so happy to be able to do our bit by raising much-needed funds and hope to encourage others to join us in our efforts.”
AWARE NI’s services include providing information, education, and support for people with mental health conditions and their families. The charity’s outreach extends across Northern Ireland, offering a lifeline to many who feel isolated and overwhelmed by their mental health struggles. By participating in the ‘By Your Side’ campaign, supporters can help AWARE NI continue this essential work.
