It has been confirmed that Derry Girls star Louisa Harland’s Disney+ show ‘Renegade Nell’ has been cancelled after one season.
Harland played the titular character, Nell "Nelly" Jackson, a quick-witted fugitive operating in 18th-century England.
The show launched earlier this year and was received well by critics and audiences alike, with an IMBd rating of 7.4 out of 10 and an average audience score of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes.
However, it failed to meet the streaming giant’s threshold for a renewal, which is based on a number of metrics.
A cast including the talents of Adrian Lester, Nick Mohammed, and Joely Richardson, along with Harland, who starred as Orla McCool in Derry Girls, has been informed of the decision.
The Dublin-born actress garnered much praise for her lead performance in the show as a superpowered highwaywoman.
A Disney spokesman told Deadline: “Disney+ original series, Renegade Nell, will not be returning for a second season on the service. We’re incredibly proud of the world created by Sally Wainwright and lead director Ben Taylor.
"We’d like to thank them, our production partners at Lookout Point, the entire cast—led by Louisa Harland—and crew for their incredible work on this series, all of whom we hope to work with again in the future.”
At the same time the series aired on the streaming platform from March until June, Harland was starting at the West End in London at Wyndham’s Theatre in the production of Long Day’s Journey into Night alongside a cast including Brian Cox.
