A barrister told Derry Magistrates' Court today that a man who admitted stealing Liverpool sports goods valued at £950 was probably 'only too happy' to return them the way Liverpool are currently playing.
Michael Andrew Mark Ward (40) of Columbcille Court in Derry admitted the theft of Liverpool sport clothing valued at £950 from Lifestyle Sports in the Richmond Centre on September 19 last year.
The court was told that at 10.25am police were on patrol in the city centre when they were flagged down by a member of staff from the Richmond Centre who said a male had made off with clothes without paying.
The staff member followed the man towards London Street and police saw from CCTV which flat the suspect entered.
They entered the flat and found Ward and the goods that were fit for resale.
At interview Ward said he had been under the influence at the time of the offences.
Defence counsel Michael Donaghy said that the goods were of 'high value' but there had been no loss to the business.
He said the defendant's last offending had been in 2017 and added Ward was not 'a prolific thief'.
Ward was sentenced to six months in prison suspended for 12 months.
