Wesley Thomas Fletcher, 35, of Leopold Street in Belfast, was remanded in custody.

A man has appeared in court in Belfast after 17 improvised explosive devices were discovered during searches in the city.

Wesley Thomas Fletcher, 35, of Leopold Street is facing three charges.

They are two charges of possession of explosives under suspicious circumstances and one charge of possession of a prohibited weapon, a Taser.

He appeared in the dock at Belfast Magistrates’ Court for the brief hearing on Monday morning, after having been arrested on Friday.

It comes after searches at properties on the Shankill Road and Edwina Street on Friday and Saturday which sparked a security operation.

Mr Fletcher said “yes”, when asked if he understood the charges against him.

A detective constable said he believed he could connect the accused to the charge.

The court heard 17 improvised explosive devices had been found, as well as two detonators.

No application for bail was made, with a defence lawyer telling the court they had no suitable addresses to offer for bail that day.

Mr Fletcher was remanded in custody.

The case is next set to be mentioned on November 30.
