St Joseph’s Boys’ School students presented with language awards by late activist's family.

Two students from St Joseph’s Boy’s School have been named as the latest recipients of the Donncha Mac Niallais Award, which provides young people with the opportunity to attend the Gaeltacht through a fully funded summer bursary.

Liam O'Connor from Year 9 and Jayden Kerr from Year 8 were presented with the awards by members of Donncha Mac Niallais’ family at a special ceremony organised by Dove House Community Trust.

Now in its fourth year, the Donncha Mac Niallais Award was developed by Dove House Community Trust to honour the life and legacy of its former manager, who passed away in September 2022.

Donncha Mac Niallais was a highly respected community activist and Irish language advocate whose work had a significant impact on the Bogside and wider community. Throughout his life, he was committed to promoting the Irish language, advancing educational opportunities and challenging social and economic inequalities.

The bursaries will enable Liam and Jayden to spend a week in the Gaeltacht this summer, with funding covering travel, accommodation, clothing and a spending allowance.

Presenting the awards, Dove House Community Trust Manager Jayne Quigg said the bursaries reflected Donncha’s lifelong belief in the importance of investing in young people.

“Comhghairdeas to Liam and Jayden on being selected as this year’s recipients of the Donncha Mac Niallais Award.

“Donncha was passionate about creating opportunities for young people and firmly believed that education could open doors and help build a brighter future for individuals, families and communities.

“He dedicated his life to supporting others and worked tirelessly to ensure that young people from all communities had the chance to fulfil their potential.

“These bursaries are a fitting tribute to his legacy. They provide young people with an opportunity to strengthen their Irish language skills, experience life in the Gaeltacht and develop confidence that will stay with them long after the trip has ended.”

She added: “Donncha played a key role in developing organisations and initiatives that helped the Irish language grow and thrive for future generations. He also made an enormous contribution to community development and his influence continues to be felt across the city today.

“We are delighted to continue this award in his memory and wish Liam and Jayden every success as they prepare for their time in the Gaeltacht this summer.”
