An entertaining evening celebrating football past and present is anticipated on Friday October 23, when veteran sports author Gerry Robinson launches his latest book, ‘Football Profiles: Limavady and Beyond’.

The launch will take place at Café Steinbeck at 7pm and will feature a number of special guest speakers from the world of football and sport.

Gerry’s latest publication brings together profiles of past and present footballers, tributes to players from bygone days, and memories from clubs and teams including Limavady United, Roe Valley, Drummond, Drumneeshy, Burnfoot and many more.

The book offers a nostalgic look back at the people, teams and moments that have helped shape the local footballing community over the years.

All proceeds from the sale of the book will be donated to Marie Curie.

Author Gerry Robinson explained the motivation behind the book:

“Football, like many sports, throughout the ages, has had a common goal in assisting and financially aiding charities.

“We are united in the desire to raise funds for our community and Marie Curie is the most worthy of causes.

“This book travels down memory lane whilst keeping a firm hold on the present.

“We visit an era when football was on the forefront of social life.

“Leather laced footballs have progressed to a modern era where the game includes technology.

“Yet, the sound of a bouncing ball will always capture the imagination of youth and the older generation.”

Gerry has combined his passion for local sport with his love of writing, using his talents to support charities and causes close to the community.

He described how his desire to help others has been a driving force behind his writing, turning his work into much-needed funds for worthy causes.

Previous volumes of Gerry’s sports writing have raised money for Foyle Hospice and supported Limavady woman Heather King’s experimental treatment for stage four liver disease.

His passion for preserving local sporting history was also showcased in 2024, when an exhibition of his collection of vintage football photographs was displayed at the Roe Valley Arts and Cultural Centre.

Together with other generous members of the Limavady community, Gerry has also played an instrumental role in organising charity sporting events, including Limavady Legends football matches and the Roe Valley 5k Walk/Run in support of Foyle Hospice.

His latest book launch is eagerly anticipated by local football fans, offering them the opportunity to revisit the stories of some of their favourite sporting legends while supporting another worthy cause.

Everyone is welcome to attend what promises to be a fun evening of football memories, stories and sporting nostalgia on October 23.
