WATCH: Concern for elderly NIHE tenants

'We do not want to be out on strike. We want to be at our work' - Troy Hunter

Striking members of the Pennyburn direct labour organisation grounds’ maintenance team have picketed the Derry headquarters of the Northern Ireland Housing Executive in pursuit of a cost of living pay rise.

The protest took place on Friday (February 3) and was supported by UNITE the Union and members of the People before Profit party.

Speaking to Derry Now, Troy Hunter, from the Pennyburn direct labour organisation grounds’ maintenance team gave Brigade housing development in the Waterside as an example of how the situation was affecting NIHE tenents.

"Brigade estate is full of elderly tenants who like to keep the wee estate as best they can. When we are at our work, we keep it to a high standard," said Troy Hunter.

"Currently, at the minute, with us being out on strike, it clearly affects them. [We have] elderly tenants affected by SAD with light not coming into their because of these overgrown shubberies at both sides of the street. So, it is really a pity on the tenants that this work isn't being done.

"We do not want to be out on strike. We want to be at our work. We just want a resolution to this here and a better pay increase, that is what we are looking for here."
