Domestic Violence artwork on city centre buildings

Work 'dedicated to those who lost their lives; those who have escaped the abuse; and reaching out to those who are still suffering under it' - Ciarán Dunlevy, artist

In the week that domestic violence and ending violence against women and girls is uppermost in the minds of Derry people following the killing of Amy Doherty, artist Ciarán Dunlevy's poignant and powerful artwork on the theme has been projected onto several city centre buildings in Derry.

Speaking to The Derry News, Ciarán said the artwork was "dedicated to those who lost their lives; those who have escaped the abuse; and reaching out to those who are still suffering under it".

One of the sites onto which the artwork was projected on Thursday night was the Amelia Earhart mural at the corner of Boating House Lane and Queen’s Quay overlooking the River Foyle.

"Amelia Earhart was a young woman who achieved amazing things," said Ciaran. "I chose this location as a way of illustrating that the wrong relationship can destroy a person's chances of achieving their potential. I wanted to contrast the two life possibilities.

"The artwork was also projected onto the Derry Walls, the Guildhall and the Quayside building.

"I was moved to create it because I saw what happened to Amy Doherty at the weekend.

"I my hope is some of the messages it contains will ring true to people who are in abusive realtionships," said Ciarán.

Ciarán Dunlevy's work can be viewed on Facebook and Instagram.
