A Draperstown man pleaded guilty to possessing a wooden shank that had razor blades attached to it when he appeared before Magherafelt Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

John Donaghy of Glenelly Villas in the town is charged with possession of an offensive weapon and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

However the 31 year-old defendant denied assaulting a man.

He told the court that he was acting in “self-defence.”

The alleged offences are believed to have occurred on October 1 at Glenelly Villas, Draperstown.

Donaghy is due back before court on January 22.
