Fuel price rise demands greater scrutiny, says Sugden

East Derry MLA Claire Sugden has called for greater scrutiny of rising petrol and diesel prices.
The independent MLA says that households that are already struggling with the cost of everyday essentials cannot keep absorbing further increases.
Ms Sugden said: “People are noticing the difference every time they fill up. For most, driving is not a luxury – it is how they get to work, take their children to school, attend appointments or care for family. People are already paying more for food, energy and other essentials, and rising fuel prices are another burden on household budgets.
“This is particularly difficult in rural areas like East Londonderry, where public transport is not always a realistic alternative and people often have no choice but to drive. I have asked the Economy Minister what is driving these increases and what engagement she has had with the Consumer Council, Competition and Markets Authority and UK Government.
“Stormont cannot control the price at the pump, but that does not mean government should simply stand back. People deserve to know why they are paying more and that these increases are being properly scrutinised. Every available lever should be used to protect consumers and ease the pressure where possible.”
