Cockhill Celtic are in the hat for the third round of the FAI Senior Cup as they exacted some revenge on fellow Intermediate side St Mochta’s with a 3-0 win at the Charlie O’Donnell Sports Grounds on Sunday.

These sides needed no introduction after meeting in Clonsilla twice in the last 16 of the FAI Cup in the last two seasons where the Leinster Senior League outfit emerged victorious on both occasions.

Home advantage again proved significant in this one as two second half penalties from Gerry Gill and a Matty Henry strike earned Donal O’Brien’s side another shot at the big guns.

The Inishowen side were good for their win but they had to survive some nervous moments before Gill’s penalty, after a foul on striker Aidan O’Donnell, gave them the lead on 48 minutes.

Former Republic of Ireland senior international Glen Crowe had the best chance of the first half as his close range shot from a Lee Dixon cross clipped the crossbar on 37 minutes.

The visitors came close again two minutes into the eventful second half when Peter Doherty cleared a Karl Summers effort off his line but the lead goal meant St Mochta’s were chasing the game for most of the second period.

Cockhill put themselves firmly in the driving seat with their second on 71 minutes as Henry fired to the roof of the net following good work by Daniel Doherty and they resolutely defended their lead in numbers as Mochta’s piled on the pressure late on.

The third goal ended the game as a contest as Paul McKinney was upended in the box by Warren Fee, earning the Mochta’s ‘keeper a second yellow card, before Gill fired past stand in ‘keeper Craig Sheridan from the resultant spot kick.
