Isle of Doagh man Stephen McLaughlin is in line to play his first game as a Southend United player this Monday night when the Shrimpers take on Coventry in League One live on Sky Sports.

The 25 year old winger completed his much touted move from Nottingham Forest to Roots Hall this afternoon after playing a major role in their promotion from League Two while on loan at the end of last season.

A former Clonmany Shamrocks, Finn Harps and Derry City player, McLaughlin experienced a frustrating two and a half years trying to break into the first team at the City Ground and, speaking to United's website, he admitted the prospect of regular football was too good an opportunity to turn down.

"I'm delighted to be back and I'm looking forward to the stability here, playing games for the next few years,” he said. “I want to kick on here and improve. It's been ongoing for a while now and I think it was back towards the end of my loan spell last season.
“I wanted to establish myself at Forest but it wasn't to be and I'm pleased to be here.”
