Former Derry rugby star launches Middle East sports business

After more than a decade of living and working in the UAE, former City of Derry Rugby Club and Dubai Exiles player Stephen Ferguson has swapped the corporate world for entrepreneurship, launching Ferguson Sports, a specialist sports distribution company alongside his wife, Deena.

The business was founded during a period of regional uncertainty, with the couple deciding to take a leap of faith and start something of their own despite the challenges brought by the conflict in the Middle East.

Having spent 11 years building a career in Dubai, it was a bold decision—but one driven by a passion for sport and a belief in the opportunities still available across the region.

Stephen's rugby journey began in Northern Ireland with City of Derry RFC before moving to Dubai, where he represented Dubai Exiles and the UAE while establishing himself professionally.

After working in sports distribution early in his career, he later moved into the healthcare sector, spending several years in business development before deciding it was time to return to the industry he knew and loved.

That decision led to the creation of Ferguson Sports, a specialist sports distribution company supplying Gilbert rugby and netball equipment and apparel to schools, clubs, academies and sporting events across the Middle East. The company is focused on delivering high quality products, expert service and long-term partnerships to help organisations at every level of the game.

For Stephen, the move represents more than just starting a business—it is an opportunity to give back to the sports that have shaped much of his life.

"Rugby has opened so many doors for me over the years, from the friendships I've made to the career opportunities it created," said Ferguson.

"Starting Ferguson Sports felt like the right next step.

“We wanted to build a business that genuinely supports schools, clubs, academies and events while helping grow rugby and netball across the region."

Although still in its early stages, Ferguson Sports has already secured a number of significant partnerships, with several exciting announcements expected in the coming months as the company continues to expand its presence throughout the Middle East.

With ambitious plans for growth, Ferguson Sports hopes to become a trusted name in the Middle East, supporting everyone from grassroots participation through to elite competitions across the region.
