The local sporting institution brings its 16-year football journey to an end

Limavady Cricket and Rugby Football Club has announced the closure of its football section, bringing to an end 16 years of participation in the game.

The club confirmed the decision on Wednesday September 2, marking the conclusion of a chapter for the team who competed across local and regional leagues making memories along the way.

Over the past 16 years, the football section became a community fixture in Limavady, with players, coaches, volunteers and supporters all playing their part.

Reflecting on the journey, a post shared on the club’s Facebook page looked back on 16 years of memories, friendships and special moments: “From our beginnings in the Coleraine Morning League to the North West Football Leagues, we have experienced everything the game can throw at you - promotions, relegations, wins, defeats, good days and difficult ones.

“Above all, we have made memories and friendships that will last far beyond football.

“We have been proud to welcome so many clubs and players to the John Hunter Grounds and Roemill playing fields over the years.

“To everyone who ever travelled to play against us, thank you.

“You helped make those grounds what they were.

“Thank you to every player who pulled on the black or red of Limavady Rugby FC over those 16 years.

“You represented the club with pride, and our belief was always simple, football should be enjoyed, regardless of the result.

“A huge amount of work has gone on behind the scenes over the years, much of it quietly and without recognition.

“There are far too many people to name, but every contribution has been appreciated.

“Sadly, for now, this is where our football journey ends.”

The announcement was met with reactions of sadness, as supporters reflected on the club’s contribution to local football while also celebrating its achievements over the years.

Former players, managers and coaches took to social media to share their own memories of their time with the club, recalling the good times, lasting friendships and special moments they experienced along the way.

Messages of support also came from clubs and football representatives locally and regionally, speaking fondly of the competitive matches against Limavady and expressed their disappointment at hearing the news.

Limavady Rugby FC will look back with pride on the progress made and the achievements secured during its 16 years in the game, with the club’s announcement continuing:

“Football was never just about the 90 minutes.

“It was about the people, the friendships, the dressing rooms, the laughs, the celebrations, the heartbreak and the memories that will stay with us long after the final whistle.

“To every player, coach, volunteer, committee member, supporter and opposition player who played a part over those 16 years, you are part of our story, and that will never be taken away.

“The football shirts may be going away, but the memories never will.

This may be the end of the football section for now, but the Clubhouse door will always be open.

“Thank you for every tackle, every goal, every pint, every laugh, every long journey and every Saturday spent together; 16 years of countless memories and lifelong friendships.”
