Sligo Rovers and Derry City played out a drab scoreless draw at the Sligo Showgrounds tonight.
Sligo Rovers 0
Derry City 0
In a game which will not live long in the memory, both teams lacked the quality to get the job done, although there were gilt-edged chances for both teams.
Derry should have taken the lead within 90 seconds off kick off but they passed up a great chance to do so. Barry McNamee’s free kick from the right floated all the way to the back post where Eoin Toal arrived unmarked, but with just a touch needed to direct the ball into the net, the defender somehow headed over the crossbar from two yards out.
The visitors were the more settled team in the opening stages and they looked the more likely of the two teams, and they almost got the opening goal in bizarre circumstances midway through the half. McNamee collected the ball on the left and his cross, wind-assisted, almost went straight in, Sligo goalkeeper Ed McGinty having to be alert to tip the ball behind for a corner.
Derry should have taken the lead in the early stages of the second half when Ciaron Harkin went through on goal but with just McGinty to beat he could not beat the Sligo goalkeeper who parried the ball behind for a corner.
From there Sligo responded well and Peter Cherrie rescued Derry by saving from Ronan Coughlan who had turned past Darren Cole.
Sligo looked the more likely in the closing stages and Coughlan was denied a goal by a wonder save from Cherrie who somehow denied him from two yards following a free kick into the area.
That was as close as either team could come in the closing stages and City were left fretting over the fitness of Eoghan Stokes who left the field on a stretcher.
