DERRY began their season under new manager Damian McErlain with a 2-14 to 3-10 win over Ulster University at Celtic Park on Wednesday night in the Dr McKenna Cup.

"We had the work to do before Christmas in terms of getting the fitness up.  If you don't get it done before Christmas, you have no chance in January." - Damian McErlain

With 11 of his 22 man squad named for the game having played minor football under McErlain, it was a youthful Derry side.

It still took a goal from James Kielt, followed by points from Enda Lynn, Mark Lynch and Ciaran McFaul in the final quarter to steer the Oakleafers on course to victory.
