Institute 2
Coleraine 0
Institute’s return from two Premiership games is now four points after they defeated Coleraine at the Riverside Stadium this evening.
Second half goals from Stephen Curry and Darren McCauley earned three very valuable points for ‘Stute who followed on from their draw at Dungannon on Saturday with another brilliant performance here.
Paul Kee made several changes to the starting eleven with captain Aaron Walsh returning, while Lee Toland, Mark Forker, Curry and McCauley all started.
Both sides traded half chances in the first half but Kee’s side had goalkeeper Michael Doherty to thank for another inspired display, as he kept out efforts from McGinty and O’Neill as the visitors pressed for an opener.
Coleraine, who need a last gasp equaliser from Davy McDaid to grab a point at Ballinamallard on the opening day of the season, missed the Derry man up top, and they paid the price for those missed chances in the second half.
There was still little to separate the sides until just past the hour mark when a wonder strike from Curry opened the scoring; the midfielder’s brilliant volley finding the back of the net in spectacular fashion.
Coleraine pushed and pushed for an equaliser but ‘Stute held firm.
At Stangmore Park on Saturday, ‘Stute sat back after taking the lead, but they didn’t make the same mistake here and as Coleraine pushed, ‘Stute caught them on the counter attack with another brilliant goal.
This time Curry was the provider as he exchanged passes with McCauley before sending his team mate through on goal, and McCauley had the necessary composure to slide the ball past the goalkeeper and into the net.
There was no way back for Coleraine from there.
Institute's next game is against Irish League champions Cliftonville this Saturday at the Riverside Stadium. Kick off 3pm.
