Man-of-the-match Conall Higgins hits seven points as late goals seal a memorable eight-point county final triumph.

Magherafelt ended Newbridge’s reign as Derry champions, as well as Sean O’Leary’s quest for an unprecedented three-in-a-row of John McLaughlin Cups, with a powerful 3-17 to 0-20 victory under the lights at FInd Insurance Celtic Park on Sunday evening.

Goals ultimately proved the difference on the night, as Conall Higgins delivered a man-of-the-match performance for O’Donovan Rossa, helping the Magherafelt men over the line while strengthening his case for a place in next year’s Derry panel.

It is Magherafelt’s first county title since 2019, having suffered heartbreak in last year’s decider when they came up just short against Newbridge, losing 1-17 to 1-15. This time, however, they exacted revenge on their south Derry rivals, with a first-half surge, aided by the gale-force breeze, laying the foundations for their triumph.

In a cagey opening, Higgins and Oisín Doherty each landed a hat-trick of scores as the sides were finely poised at 0-4 apiece by the seventeenth minute. Higgins opened the scoring, only for Doherty to respond with a quick-fire brace. Shane Heavron levelled matters in the tenth minute before further scores from Doherty and Conor McAteer pushed Newbridge two points clear. A Conall Higgins two-pointer then brought the sides level midway through the half.

The champions appeared to have found their rhythm soon afterwards, with Doherty chipping over three unanswered points. However, Magherafelt seized complete control from there. A brace of two-pointers from Higgins, alongside scores from Aidan McCloskey, Cahir Spiers and Eoin McEvoy, suddenly saw O’Donovan Rossa move into a commanding 0-13 to 0-7 lead at the break.

The momentum continued after the restart, with Heavron pointing from a free before Johnny McElraine raised the first of Magherafelt’s three green flags in the thirty-third minute. A lofted ball from McCloskey fell kindly to the corner-back, who fisted it into the net to extend O’Donovan Rossa’s advantage.

Further scores from McEvoy and Heavron had the challengers leading 1-16 to 0-7 by the thirty-seventh minute, as the reigning champions appeared to be running out of steam.

To their credit, however, Newbridge roared back into contention, registering seven unanswered points over the following quarter of an hour. Conor McAteer reignited their charge with an outstanding two-pointer, while Doherty and Shea McAteer also flashed efforts over the crossbar.

A brace of frees from Doherty, either side of scores from Callum McGrogan and another two-pointer from the sharpshooter, suddenly brought the deficit down to a goal with eight minutes remaining, as the scoreboard read 1-16 to 0-16.

Once again, though, Magherafelt delivered a devastating blow to halt Newbridge’s momentum. In the fifty-sixth minute, McCloskey pounced on a loose ball before rifling a stunning shot off the crossbar and into the roof of the net, restoring his side’s control at a crucial stage.

Newbridge refused to surrender, with Doherty landing another two-pointer and adding two further scores from play to cut the gap to two points deep into stoppage time. McEvoy responded with a vital insurance point at the other end as the champions went in search of a goal to keep their hopes alive.

But with the final action of the 2026 O’Neills Derry Senior Football Championship, Magherafelt put the cherry on top of a famous victory. As Newbridge poured bodies forward, Higgins led a devastating counterattack and played in Cormac Murphy, who calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner of the net to seal a memorable triumph.

After six years without the county crown and three final defeats, O’Donovan Rossa have reclaimed their place at the summit of Derry football, securing an eighth senior championship title and bringing Newbridge’s reign to an emphatic end. They will now fly the oakleaf flag in the AIB Ulster senior club football championship, where they will face Monaghan champions Scotstown on November 8.
