Sligo Rovers 3

Derry City missed the opportunity to move into third place as they fell to a lacklustre defeat at a rain-swept Sligo Showgrounds.
The conditions made the first half something of a farce with rain and a gale blowing into the faces of the Derry City players, meaning that most of the play in the first 45 minutes was down at the Derry City end.
Sligo’s hopes of getting off to a good start were realised just eight minutes into the game when they opened the scoring, with the wind blowing across the Showgrounds claiming the assist, blowing Rhys McCabe’s inswinging corner kick over the head of Gerard Doherty and into the net.
Derry were just trying to survive until the half time break, but with just five minutes to go, they conceded again, and again it was a goal which could have been avoided.
Sligo had failed to register a single shot on target in the first 40 minutes but full back Tobi Adebayo-Rowling tried his luck and it paid dividends as his curling effort from 20 yards deceived Gerard Doherty, who could only parry the ball straight out to Vinny Faherty, who couldn’t miss from just four yards out.
Derry huffed and puffed in the second half but were unable to respond with Shaun Patton rarely tested in the Sligo goal.
Their night was summed up when Darren Cole was caught on the ball in the last minute and Craig Roddan nipped in to roll the ball into the empty net.
