One of the north-west's rising boxing stars is celebrating his first ever senior international win.
Brett McGinty, who hails from St. Johnston and who boxes out of the Oakleaf Boxing Club in Derry, was part of the Irish team that took on their American counterparts.
Following an 8-4 reverse on the opening night on Monday, Ireland were once again beaten in Springfield, Massachusetts, by 7-3, but questions were raised about some of the decisions.
Middleweight Brett McGinty put on a great performance as he overcame New Yorker Nikita Ababiy, and claiming a split-decision win, for the visiting team.
A delighted McGinty expressed his delight on social media.
"I got my first senior international win last night, before coming on this trip I hadn’t had a senior international and had only 3 fights at middleweight, I fought one of the top middleweights in the world on Monday in a great fight and winning last night has made this a successful trip for me and the rest of the team ?I’m disappointed to be missing out on our clubs 25th anniversary show back home against the Canadians but I would like to wish everyone fighting and involved the best of luck, without oakleaf boxing club I wouldn’t be in this position representing my country out here in Boston "
Oakleaf Boxing Club, which is hosting a Canadian team this evening (Friday) at the Maldron Hotel in Derry, has posted the following video of McGinty in action.
