There has been clarification on the effect that straight red cards will have in Derry GAA club football and hurling.

In the past, players who were suspended through the issue of a straight red had to sit out the length of that ban in all codes across all age groups but, this year, those suspensions will only apply to the level in which they were issued.

For example, someone sent off in a reserve game for instance will still be eligible to play for their seniors, while at underage level, someone sent off at under-16 level would still be eligible to play minor football.

The games administration committee has sent the following reminder of the rules:

Those players receiving a minimum of a one match suspension (depending) on the nature of the offence as follows:

A player red carded as above in a senior/intermediate/junior football match misses the next game at that level only

A player red carded as above in a reserve football match misses the next game in the next Reserve football game only

A player red carded as above in a senior hurling  match in Derry misses the next hurling  game at that level in Derry

A player red carded as above in an U14 football match misses the next game at that level (ie U14 football only)

A player sent off in an U18 hurling match as above misses the next game at that level (ie U18  hurling only)

A player could be red carded in an U14 football league game and still be eligible to play the next day in an U14 football championship game or U16 football league game.

A player could be red carded in a SENIOR League game and still be eligible to play IN THE NEXT RESERVE GAME.
