It was a night of mixed fortunes for Derry City.

The Brandywell club travelled to lowly Wexford Youths but could only manage a 0-0 draw.

However, it could turn out to be a precious point, as Shamrock Rovers, Derry’s nearest rivals for the coveted third place, which would secure European football at the end of the season, were beaten 3-0 by Cork City.

Derry had a number of clear-cut chances at Ferrycarrig Park in Wexford tonight but Rory Patterson (above) and his teammates just couldn’t make the vital breakthrough.

Tonight’s results mean that Derry City now sit on 49 points, with Shamrock Rovers on 46 points.

However, crucially, Rovers have a game in hand.
