There was a Maghera man on the podium at the recent Joe Barry 200 mile solo race.

Nicky Gormley, who cycles with Carn Wheelers, finished in second place in the prestigious event

It is a non-stop 200-mile World Ultra-Cycling Association accredited endurance cycling race.

This route included climbing, time-trialling, and general road racing in relatively equal proportions.

The initial 70 miles offered an opportunity to settle into the race before beading into Donegal and the Barnesmore Gap

The first real challenges and climbs were  in the unforgettable Sperrin mountains.

It negotiated numerous valleys and climbed the infamous and lonely Barnes Gap and Sawel mountain.

“A massive congratulations to Nicky,” commented PC Convery of Carn Wheelers.

“Nicky completed the full race in a total time of 11 hours 11 minutes with approximately 12,000ft of climbing.

“All our Carn men completed the ultra-race in excellent times given the horrendous weather conditions that they endured. Well done to Ryan Kelly, Tony O’Doherty and Ryan McErlean.”
