Derry City are through to the semi-finals of this season’s EA Sports League Cup after getting the better of Finn Haps in a pulsating cup tie at the Brandywell.

Derry City 2

Finn Harps 1

After extra time

David Parkhouse was the City hero, scoring twice to overturn Nathan Boyle’s second half goal as this game went all the way to extra time before there was a winner.

The Brandywell was stunned on 55 minutes as Harps took the lead with their first shot on target. Colm Deasy crossed from the right and the ball deflected into the path of Nathan Boyle, who wasted no time in sweeping the ball past Gartside and into the net to make it 1-0.

Harps came close to finishing Derry off on 80 minutes when Caolan McAleer nutmegged Josh Kerr and raced towards goal, before curling the ball towards the bottom corner only to be denied by a fine save from Gartside.

That proved a crucial moment as Derry equalised within 60 seconds, Ciaran Coll delivering an exceptional cross from the left which missed Junior, but not Parkhouse, who side-footed home from close range to the delight of the Brandywell.

Derry needed just four minutes of extra time before breaking through again, a long clearance by Ciaran Coll sending Parkhouse away, and he beat goalkeeper McGinley to the ball before knocking it into the net to give his team for the first time in the game.

Harps must surely have been thinking it wasn’t their night when they passed up another chance in the final moments of the half, Tony McNamee’s shot deflecting into the path of McAleer just six yards out but he was denied by a brilliant save from Gartside with the ball spinning up and hitting the crossbar before going behind for a corner.

Harps pushed hard in the second period of extra time but they had to play most of the second period of extra time with ten men after Mark Coyle received a second yellow card.

Derry, with the extra man, held firm to go through to the semi-finals.
