And so Connor Coyle leaves Glasgow defeated at the semi final stage, yet triumphant in so many ways.

The St. Joseph's club man was tonight beaten by by a highly-fancied, former Olympic medallist in Vijender Singh and, like Sean McGlinchey just hours earlier, had to make do with the bronze.

But Coyle has lit a trail in these games, winning three fights with outstanding performances en route to the medal reckonings and, although injury held him up in his last four bout on Friday evening, no-one would begrudge Singh his place in the decider.

The performances of the Derry fighter have forced the boxing fraternity to remember his name and, whatever Coyle decides to next, whether he continues to progress on the amateur scene or attempts to force his way into the professional reckoning, he will return to Derry this weekend to a hero's welcome.
