Finn Harps 2, Drogheda United 3
Drogheda United completed their first double success of the season as they defeated Finn Harps in tonight's re-arranged League of Ireland Premier Division clash between the already relegated bottom two at Finn Park.
In what was probably the last ever Premier Division game to be played at the venue – Harps are still hoping to resurrect their new stadium project – the Donegal club took a first minute lead but limped off well beaten in the end with defensive errors costing them dearly.
Friday’s original tie fell foul of Storm Brian, and Sligo’s defeat of Derry City on Saturday proved to be the result that sent the Donegal side drop through the relegation trap door.
Ollie Horgan's Harps had the tonic of going ahead on this occasion after 55 seconds when midfielder Caolan McAleer let fly with a looping shot over Stephen McGuinness.
Drogheda, whose last league win was in April against Harps in Ballybofey, went close to a response with Stephen Meaney forcing Ciaran Gallagher into making a decent stop.
Harps held the upper hand in the first half and felt they should have had a penalty when Damien McNulty appeared to be impeded in the box.
Harps spurned a great chance to double their tally on 57 minutes when Keita played a delightful ball through for Danny Morrissey – but both his initial shot and the follow up were saved by McGuinness. Moments later Morrissey struck the woodwork.
Drogheda capitalised on some sloppy defending to bag the equaliser on 61 minutes with a well placed delivery from Chris Mulhall.
McGuinness then thwarted Gareth Harkin with an acrobatic save before Drogheda grabbed the lead on 72 minutes with a fine long range shot from substitute Thomas Byrne after more suspect home defending.
Drogheda compounded the misery for Harps when Stephen Meaney fired in a Mark Doyle cross on 83 minutes before McAleer chipped McGuinness for a brilliant second for the home side on 90 minutes but it was too little, too late.
Harps conclude life in the Premier Division away to Bohemians on Friday.
