Gerard Doherty has been named as Derry City’s new captain.

The 35-year-old, who has been at the club since 2008, will lead the team out against Bray Wanderers at Maginn Park on Fridaynight, for the first time since the tragic death of beloved club captain Ryan McBride.

The Candy Stripes have had recent games against Limerick and Galway United postponed and they go into the fixture hoping to maintain their 100% start to the season.

City boss Kenny Shiels has urged his players to make sure they go onto the field this weekend in the right frame of mind.

“They have to go out there and win it for themselves, and then they can think about Ryan. If the players go out there with the mind-set that they absolutely have to win it for Ryan, then that could prove too much for them.

“It is going to be hard and it’s difficult because life just continues, but while we can’t move on, we will go on because we have to,” he said. “Playing for each other now and having that mind-set will give them a much more positive dynamic and that is something we have to do on Friday and every game now.”
