Former Manchester United midfielder Darron Gibson could be on the move again after a disappointing year with Everton.
The local talent is wanted by the man who brought him to Goodison Park, with David Moyes keen to strengthen his struggling Sunderland squad.
New boss Ronald Koeman seemingly doesn’t have any immediate plans for the Republic of Ireland international who hasn’t played a competitive game for the Toffees since August of last year when he appeared for just 24 minutes in an EFL Cup game against Yeovil.
After making 69 appearances during his five years with Everton, the midfielder signed a two-year contract extension in the Summer but with the likes of Morgan Schneiderlin arriving from Old Trafford, and the emergence of Tom Davies, it looks less and less likely that Gibson has any future at Goodison Park.
The former St Columb’s College student began his career at Institute before making the move to Old Trafford in 2004. He made his senior debut for the Reds in a League Cup game with Barnet and from there he went on to make 31 appearances for the club, scoring three goals under Sir Alex Ferguson before David Moyes brought the player to Everton in 2012.
Injury woes have plagued more recent years of the 29-year-old’s career but despite his lack of game time in recent seasons, Moyes is keen to secure Gibson’s signature and with no Sunderland midfielder having scored a goal so far this Premiership season, Gibson’s record of 13 in 105 club games may be the deciding factor in kick-starting his career.
When contacted by the Derry News, the Republic of Ireland international said he was unable to comment on any speculation at the minute.
