The Republic of Ireland's hopes of qualifying for the World Cup in Russia next summer are over.

They were hammered 5-1 by Denmark in tonight's play-off at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, having drawn the first leg 0-0.

Derry's Shane Duffy, whose father Brian hails from Letterkenny, opened the scoring for Martin O'Neill's side after just six minutes.

But Denmark stormed back and tore Ireland apart.

Afterwards a hugely emotional James McClean could hardly speak when interviewed on RTE.
