The capacity of Derry City’s new ‘home’ ground at Maginn Park has been capped at just over 1,500 spectators, with 320 being seated. However, the possibility of installing additional seating, using scaffolding, behind the goal at the Ferris’ Lane end of the Buncrana venue is being examined, the Derry News can reveal.
It has also emerged that Derry City is considering the possibility of doing a deal with local bus operators to provide transport from Derry to games at the Inishowen ground.
A meeting of the Inishowen Junior League – which owns the ground – is due to take place tonight to discuss the on-going works ahead of City’s first league game at Maginn Park against Limerick on Friday, March 3.
The ground was inspected recently by representatives of an independent company that carries out health and safety inspections on behalf of the Football Association of Ireland.
A number of matters have still to be attended to, including the provision of more toilets, as well as catering facilities and a media area.
A spokesman for the Inishowen League confirmed that works are “on-going and progressing well.”
Derry City will be responsibly for stewarding and securing arrangements and liaising with An Garda Siochana.
There will be four entrances to the ground, with one section on the clubhouse side being reserved for away fans.
However, Maginn Park will not be suitable for European games, and this is still an issue for Derry City.
