The SDLP have co-opted one of their party members on to Derry City Councill following the Jimmy Carr controversy.

Carr resigned from the party last month after an article appeared in the Sunday Life alleging that he had sent naked pictures of himself via a council-owned iPad.

He had been a member of the local council since 2011 but failed to win a seat on the new Derry City and Strabane District Council at local government elections in May.

Just days before the election, the SDLP withdrew support for Carr over allegations that ‘inappropriate’ messages had been sent on a council-owned iPad which he had been using.

The SDLP has selected 27 year-old Mark O’Donnell to take over Carr’s seat on Derry City Council.

However, he will only be in the job until April next year when the new Derry and Strabane ‘super council’ will take over the running of local government matters.
