Young people have been warned they are risking their lives by engaging in ongoing vandalism at the new Brandywell stadium which is currently under construction.
In the latest attack, a fence at the Lonemoor Road site was torn down, while other attacks have also seen pallets and special construction blocks damaged and smashed.
Speaking to the Derry News, the independent councillor for the area, Gary Donnelly, said he spoke with contractors at the site, who said that the damage is costing hundreds of pounds, and warned that if it continues, it could delay the opening of the new stadium and sports facility.
“There a significant cost involved here given that these are special blocks used in construction,” he said.
“However, more worrying is the fact that you have the situation here where young people are running around a building site at night, placing their lives at risk and annoying the local community.”
Cllr Donnelly added: “I would appeal to the parents of these young people to make them aware of the danger they are placing themselves.
“The stadium’s progress is ahead of schedule and the attacks could set that back.”
