THE removal of The Venue at Ebrington will be completed by the end of next month, it has been confirmed.
This week saw the contractors tasked with dismantling the facility remove the bulk of internal material from The Venue, which hosted some of the most high profile events of the City of Culture 2013, including Radio One’s Big Weekend.
The Derry News revealed in July of last year that The Venue would be taken down at the end of 2013, due to the costs associated with the running of the site.
A last ditch attempt was made to save The Venue when the Department of Social Development (DSD) hosted an information event inviting offers of interest from the private sector to take over the running of the facility.
However, only one potential investor turned up at event, and no offers were received.
The DSD provided the £4.6m for the erection of the temporary concert venue, which will cost an estimated £500, 000 to take down.
The deconstruction of The Venue began after it hosted the last high profile concert of the Culture Year, the Relief of Derry Symphony concert.
A spokesperson for the urban regeneration company Ilex, which manages the Ebrington site, said that the removal of The Venue was scheduled to be complete at the end of February, weather permitting.
