The Ulster Orchestra is delighted to return to Derry, bringing the magic of live orchestral music to the Guildhall on Saturday, September 13 at 7.00pm as part of its On Your Doorstep concert series.
This special performance marks the Ireland and Northern Ireland debut of German-Colombian conductor Anna Handler, an up-and-coming conductor who will be joining the Orchestra fresh from two exciting debuts with the LA Phil and Boston Symphony Orchestras, praised for her “crisp, powerful conducting style”, (The Berkshire Edge, Thomas Jensen, 2025).
The Ulster Orchestra has been a regular visitor to the city with its popular, festive concerts - Messiah and The Magic of Christmas along with a successful night at the Guildhall in February. Now, it’s bringing this new, exhilarating programme of dramatic orchestral masterpieces.
The evening opens with Purcell’s dignified Funeral Music for Queen Mary, followed by one of Haydn’s finest symphonies, rich with dark colour and melancholy. From there, feel the elemental force of Brahms’s Tragic Overture before the concert closes with the passion, betrayal, and triumph of love in Tchaikovsky’s sweeping ballet, Swan Lake.
This concert will only be performed in Derry. With an emotional and dramatic programme, an extraordinary conductor making her Irish and Northern Irish debut, and the Ulster Orchestra in full force, this promises to be a thrilling night of music you won’t want to miss.
