Derry to host premiere of powerful new James Connolly film ‘We Only Want the Earth’

Féile 2025 will host the Derry premiere of ‘We Only Want the Earth’ - a compelling new feature documentary exploring the life, legacy and ideas of James Connolly - one of Ireland’s most iconic revolutionary figures.

The documentary features contributions from leading historians, trade unionists, and activists. It also includes performances of songs and poems - spoken and sung by renowned artists such as Christy Moore, Stephen Rea, David Power, Eoghan Ó Ceannabháin, and Esosa Ighodaro, as well as Connolly’s great-great-granddaughter, Tamsin Iona Connolly Heron.

Directed by award-winning filmmaker Alan Gilsenan (Yellow Asylum Films), the documentary is based on Connolly’s own writings and was created to inspire and enlighten a contemporary audience.

It brings Connolly’s radical politics to life through a blend of powerful narration, historical commentary, and artistic performance - placing his ideas and achievements in conversation with the political and social struggles of today.

A towering figure in Irish socialism and republicanism, Connolly’s name remains central to the trade union movement and to generations of those who have fought for justice, workers’ rights and national self-determination.

The film charts his journey from working-class roots to his leadership in the 1916 Easter Rising, while highlighting his enduring influence on radical left-wing politics.

This is a must-see event for anyone interested in Ireland’s political history, labour movements, or the continuing relevance of Connolly’s vision.

The Derry premiere will be held at the Nerve Centre on Thursday, August 14 at 7.00pm.
