Registration opens for new semester of Irish and music classes at Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin

Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin, the Derry city-centre Irish language and arts centre, have just launched their new semester of classes, with online and in-person registration now open for their September starts.

This will be the fifteenth year of running courses from their purpose-built building on Great James’ Street, which welcomes over 500 students weekly to Irish and music classes throughout the eight-month academic year.

Carol Nic Conmara, Education Coordinator of Coláiste an Phobail, shared more of what learners can expect from their Irish course.

“September is always a really exciting time for us, as we not only get to welcome completely new learners to the Irish language community in Derry, but also catch up with those who have been attending lessons with us over the years. However, considering the very positive growth of support for our native tongue recently, from representation at international arts festivals to the Waterside’s first Irish language school, we’re expecting this year to be especially busy for our conversational Irish courses.

"So if you’re thinking about joining us, please feel free to get in contact and we’d love to hear from you!”

Paul McIntyre, Education Coordinator of Acadamh Ceoil, outlined what their music programme is about.

Acadamh Ceoil Chaoimhín Úi Dhochartaigh is the North West's foremost hub for traditional music, dancing and singing – a centre of excellence that promotes participation and inclusivity. With dedicated instrument classes, group options, individual lessons, and regular formal and informal performance opportunities, there is something to suit all ages, abilities and interests!

"With an
outstanding concert hall at its core, together with
supporting spaces for informal performance, learning and development, the Academy encourages and enables a transformative offering of musical and cultural discovery.”

The organisation also offers a programme of activity for learners and the public throughout the year, including informal traditional Irish music sessions, trips to the Gaeltacht, end of year parties and showcases, and weekly conversation circles.

You can find out more through the details listed below, or by visiting their open day between 12noon - 2.00pm on Saturday, 9th September in An Chultúrlann, 37 Great James’ Street, BT48 7DF. The event will be an informal opportunity to find out more about what’s on offer, get a feel for how the lessons are run, and sign up for the courses.
