The Western Trust has said it is investigating new allegations of abuse at a number of its facilties.

The news comes after it was revealed that people with learning disabilities have been physically abused at a care home in Derry.

The investigation has found that five cases of intentional physical abuse on 'vulnerable' adults took place at the Ralphs Close residential care home at Gransha during the period from 2010 to 2012.

Kieran Downey, Director of Social Work with the Trust, has now revealed that a number of new allegations - understood to be less than ten - are currently being probed by the Trust.

He said that the allegations concern sub-contractors employed by the Trust.

Ralphs Close opened in 2010 and is a residential home for adults with a learning disability.

The home provides single room accommodation for 16 adults.

The Western Trust launched an investigation in 2012 after a large number of abuse allegations about staff at the home were made by an anonymous whistleblower.

The families of the people being cared for at Ralphs Close were this week informed about the findings of the investigation during a series of meetings with Western Trust management officials.

As well as the five cases of physical abuse, four allegations of verbal abuse from 2010 to 2012 were substantiated during the investigation.

The Western Trust has apologised for the abuse which took place and stressed that measures have been put in place in a bid to ensure it never happens again.
