SDLP Cllr Angela Dobbins has welcomed the news that Firmus Energy have plans to extend a network of pipes transporting gas energy further into the Culmore area.
Cllr Dobbins said: “I have been liasing with Firmus for a number of years now and I am delighted that the group have now received the green light to extend the gas mainpipe further into the Culmore area.
"Works have already commenced to feed off from the mains into the adjoining areas and I have been informed that O Donovan Rd, Colby Ave, Thornhill Pk and Templard have now become piped and live feeds with more to follow. It is expected that works for this year will go as far as the Culmore Point Rd.
The availability of another utility will give the residents in Culmore an opportunity to have a choice in regard to household energy.
The innovative plans to lay pipes beneath the river Foyle, from Strathfoyle to Thornhill that were once a draft on paper have now become a reality that is likely to be commenced soon and completed by 2020.
"Residents in the Culmore area have contacted me expressing their concerns regarding another summer of upheaval and traffic jams and I would agree that it would seem that for the last three years our lives have been disrupted by roadworks and the mud and dirt associated with one utility provider and another.
"I have been given assurances from Firmus that every attempt to minimise inconvenience caused by the mains pipe-laying will be made and that they will endeavour to keep the adjoining residential areas as clean as possible.
"I would ask that residents be tolerant of the disruption over the next few months and accept these works as beneficial to our community.”
