Prosecutions could be taken against people who left rubbish outside civic amenity sites in Derry.

A large amount of rubbish was left outside the gates of the city’s three dumps on Thursday during a one day strike by workers at the facilities.

The strike involved public sector workers, including employees of Derry City Council, which manages the local dumps, who want a wage increase.

As a result of the strike, a wide range of public buildings were closed on Thursday, including leisure centres, libraries and museums.

When staff at the local dumps returned to work on Friday morning, they discovered a large amount of rubbish had been left at the gates.

Signs had been put up on the gates advising people that the dumps were closed on Thursday but would re-open on Friday.

However, despite this, many people left their rubbish at the gates.

A spokesperson for Derry City Council said the illegal dumping of waste outside of the amenity sites was regrettable and advised the public that it is illegal to dump or leave rubbish outside of an approved site.

“Council will be collating any evidence with a view to bringing forward penalties where possible,” the council spokesperson added.
