A pedestrian in his seventies who was killed in a three-car crash in County Down yesterday was a native of Ballinderry.
The victim, who has been named locally as Paddy Wilkinson, was walking on the Killard Road near Downpatrick at about 4.20pm yesterday (Wednesday) when the incident happened.
A black Seat Ibiza, a blue Vauxhall Corsa and a Land Rover were involved in the crash.
Mr Wilkinson, who moved to County Down from Ballinderry recently, died at the scene.
It is understood police are investigating whether some of the cars were racing each other.
A 19 year-old man was arrested this morning in connection with the fatal crash.
A 20 year-old man, who was arrested yesterday, remains in police custody.
Speaking to Derrynow.com, local Sinn Féin councillor Gavin Bell said the tight-knit community of Ballinderry has been plunged into grief.
“Paddy was a great man in the community. He was a mechanic who fixed people’s lawnmowers and saws. It saddens me that we have lost a great man and a member of our community. It will be hard felt among parishioners in and around Ballinderry who knew Paddy and his family well. It’s tragic.”
Councillor Bell also urged motorists to exercise caution on the road.
“The current road safety campaign being broadcast on television is a reminder of the dangers on our roads and I would ask people to be more vigilant to avoid any further tragedies,” he added.
