A Derry charity  which provides support for those affected by cancer has held a unique tattoo fundraiser.

The Pink Ladies hosted a ‘Tattoo-a-thon’ at the newly opened Michael Kelly Tattoo Lounge at Beechwood Avenue on Saturday, which saw over 140 people adorned with a new tattoo.

Speaking to the Derry News, Donna Hutton, a volunteer for the Pink Ladies said that events where people impacted by cancer receive tattoos were becoming increasingly popular.

“We had 150 people originally scheduled to come in, and we got 142, which we were delighted with, because getting a tattoo is a big deal,” she said.

“A lot of cancer survivors are getting tattoos to either cover up scars or as a symbol of them having battled with cancer, so I approached Michael with the idea and he was really into the idea.

“He brought in the team from Studio 76 in the Waterside who helped with a similar event for the British Heart Foundation (BHF).”

She added: “A lot of people who were there got a tattoo in memory of a loved one who passed away due to cancer, so it meant a lot to them, and it was great to see so many people of different ages involved.”

Donna continued that £3,800 has been raised for the Pink Ladies as a result of the event.
