The Everglades Hotel was the venue for the Hurt/Derry GP Federation End-of-Project Community Well-Being Programme Celebration focussing on over 65's on Thursday last.
The programme, funded by the Derry GP Federation, engaged 55 people aged over-65 in activities promoting health, shared learning and social connection. They also explored practical ways to look after their well-being through sessions on foot health, over-the-counter medication, sleep health and skin care.
The intergenerational programme also brought older and younger people together to exchange knowledge, skills and experiences with older participants sharing their life experience with the next generation while also learning from young people - creating opportunities for conversation, understanding and mutual appreciation.
They also learned how to get more out of their in-house technology, with opportunities to ask questions and build confidence using their devices.
Art classes and chair yoga sessions offered opportunities to support both physical and emotional wellbeing. Art encouraged creativity, self-expression and relaxation, while chair yoga highlighted the importance of keeping movement part of everyday life.
There were also trips to Titanic Belfast, Crumlin Road Gaol and Doagh Famine Village. Alongside exploring local history and heritage, the group spent time getting to know one another and building connections through shared experiences.
Speaking at Thursday’s celebration which included a panel discussion, talks from various stakeholders, followed by refreshments and entertainment, Leanne Doherty, Social Enterprise Manager, Hurt, described the programme as a fantastic number of weeks creating new experiences for those taking part and said they all got so much out of it judging from the positive comments received.
‘Today was a fantastic afternoon spent reflecting on the journey, sharing memories, enjoying good food and music, and most importantly, celebrating the people who made the project what it was – a huge success. It was lovely to see everyone together in one room, catching up, laughing and recognising the friendships and connections that have grown throughout the project.
Adding to those sentiments, Stephen Browne, Mental Health Lead, Derry GP Federation said: ‘Following the celebrations, we have continued to see the incredible difference this service is making in the lives of older people in our community. What began as a programme to provide support has grown into a place where people feel valued, understood and, most importantly, that they belong.
‘For many participants, coming through the doors has meant finding friendship at a time when they may have felt lonely or isolated, rebuilding confidence when it had been lost, and discovering hope and enjoyment again. Well done to all!’
Ms. Doherty also paid a huge thank you to all the participants, the staff who supported them, the Derry GP Federation and everyone at HURT for being part of such a special project.
‘A truly brilliant way to bring the project to a close and celebrate everything we achieved together.’
